Royal Doulton Miniature Toby Jug - "The Cardinal"

A Toby Jug is a figural ceramic pitcher modeled in the form of a popular character - be it a historical,  fictional, or generic character. Thought to date back to the mid 18^th Century, Toby Jugs have evolved over two hundred and fifty years - originally made in the form of a seated full-length character to the more notable Character Jugs of the 1930s, which comprises of the head and sometimes shoulders.

“The Cardinal’ was made in the likeness of a Victorian actor called Henry Irving. He played the part of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in Shakespeare’s Henry VIII.
